I’m not going to be a hipster and pretend I discovered Gabrielle Aplin before I was bloody born or something! I discovered her when I heard her rendition of ‘The Power of Love’ on the John Lewis advert. I then watched the full thing on YouTube which amazed me. I then followed her and listened to her music on YouTube.
Gabrielle Ann Aplin (born 10 October 1992) is an English singer-songwriter. Aplin came to public attention after she gained a large online following by posting acoustic covers of songs on her YouTube channel. In February 2012, Aplin signed a recording deal with Parlophone and began recording her début album.
Gabrielle Aplin's first success came from the unlikely source of a Christmas TV advert that became inescapable in the . during the 2012 festive period. Her cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Power of Love" almost managed to snatch the coveted . Here on her debut full-length, English Rain, Aplin explores her d pop sound, with the addition of a full band and production from Mike Spencer (Emeli Sandé, Ellie Goulding, Rizzle Kicks). The opening tracks clearly speak to her known influencers, Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, as the rousing "Panic Cord" sets the tone of the record, and Aplin reflects on a broken relationship to a Mumford & Sons-esque folk romp. However, it's on the record's quieter moments that she sounds most comfortable.
