Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. Beethoven composed in several musical genres and for a variety of instrument combinations. His works for symphony orchestra include nine symphonies (the Ninth Symphony includes a chorus), and about a dozen pieces of "occasional" music. Play something," he told Beethoven. Beethoven played the opening of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor. Not that," said Mozart. Anybody can play that. Play something of your ow. So Beethoven did. How did Mozart react? When the young man had finished, Mozart walked into the adjoining room where his wife Constanze was entertaining friends. Beethoven had no choice but to leave. Less than two weeks after arriving in Vienna for what promised to be a trip that would change his life, he left for Bonn without ever achieving his ambition of taking lessons with Mozart. By the time he returned to Vienna in November 1792, Mozart was dead. How was Beethoven influenced by Mozart? Beethoven's admiration for, and championing of, Mozart's music remained undimmed for the rest of his life.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had a powerful influence on the work of Ludwig van Beethoven. They are said to have met in Vienna in 1787, and Beethoven is said to have had a few lessons from Mozart. Beethoven knew much of Mozart's work. Some of his music recalls Mozart's, he composed several variations on Mozart's themes and he modeled a number of his compositions on those of the older composer.
