Common's Like Water for Chocolate occupies a pivotal position in the current Black Renaissance that has emerged to rescue hip-hop music from decaying into a soulless nightmare. On the heels of seminal releases from the Roots and Mos Def, Like Water for Chocolate engenders an ongoing sense of hope in those who pine for a new school of black intellectuals, making heads bop in the process. The entire album is produced by the talented ?uestlove of the Roots, who verifies that he has more than enough musical acumen to go around. Fellow Roots Black Thought and Rahzel provide raw backing vocals on "Cold Blooded," a relentless rhythmic cacophony in which deep horns and concussive funk guitar rattle the brain harder than a Mack truck.

Positive-minded alternative rap came back into vogue by the new millennium, and Common managed to land with major label MCA for 2000's Like Water for Chocolate. The album established him as a leading figure of alternative rap's second generation, not just because of the best promotion he'd ever had, but also because it was his great musical leap forward, building on the strides of One Day It'll All Make Sense. There's production work by the Roots' ?uestlove, neo-soul auteur D'Angelo, the Soulquarians, and DJ Premier.
I never knew a luh, luh-luh, a love like this Gotta be somethin' for me to write this Queen, I ain't seen you in a minute Wrote this letter, and finally decide to send it Signed, sealed, delivered, for us to grow together Love has no limit, let's spend it slow forever I know your heart is weathered. The Light is the second single from Common’s 2000 album Like Water For Chocolate.
Common's continues his innate knack for storytelling on Like Water for Chocolate. He opens up the LP with a tribute to Nigerian musician Fela Kuti on "Time Travelin'," with assistance from Kuti's own son, Femi. His wordplay continues on tracks like "The 6th Sense" and "The Questions," which are only a couple of standout hits on the project. Neither of them, however, had the same impact as the J Dilla-produced "The Light," one of Common's hugest singles to date. Like Water for Chocolate peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, and was placed on over a dozen Album of the Year lists worldwide the year of its release. To this day, the project is undoubtedly viewed as the turning point in the Southside rhymer's career. See 30 Albums That Will Make You Appreciate Hip-Hop.
