The Free Design was a Delevan, New York-based vocal group whose music can be described as sunshine pop and baroque pop. Though they did not achieve much commercial recognition during their main recording career, their work later influenced bands including Stereolab, Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, Beck and The High Llamas. After the band's breakup in 1972, Chris Dedrick recorded a solo album, Be Free, which went unreleased until 2000. He moved to Toronto, Canada, where he became a music producer, arranger, and a classical and soundtrack composer. He worked with directors Guy Maddin and Don McKellar, winning a Genie Award for Maddin's The Saddest Music in the World, and he made music for the Ray Bradbury Theater TV-series.

Chris Dedrick was the singer and principal songwriter in sibling vocal group The Free Design. In 1972 he recorded the solo album "Be Free," but it was never released until 2005 under the title Wishes. Chris was also well known as a composer and arranger for television and film. Chris Dedrick was a talent of immeasurable proportion. His musical innovation in the early '70s was like nothing we had heard to that point in time. Chris was a kind soul with a flair for the unusual in all aspects of his life. He was like a brother to me and was one of those true friends that I always felt at home with.
