Arhoolie's Mississippi Delta Blues is one of the definitive Mississippi Fred McDowell albums. Culled from two sessions, recorded in 1964 and 1965 respectively, this blues revival-era recording finds McDowell at his very best, performing powerful versions of traditional Delta blues songs, as well as a handful of originals. McDowell recorded many fine albums, but this is arguably his best.

The simplest and most perfect form of the blues: an acoustic guitar, and a booming, wailing voice. How could music this beautiful and pure have (d)evolved into a bunch of rich dudes jamming on the most boring party music in existence for hours on end? HOW?? Track listing: 1. Write Me a Few Lines 2. Louise 3. I Heard Somebody Call 4. 61 Highway 5. Mama Don't Allow 6. Kokomo Blues 7. Fred's Worried Life Blues 8. You Gonna Be Sorry 9. Shake 'Em on Down 10. McDowell spent his early years working on his father’s farm in Rossville, finally leaving it when he was twenty-one years of age because, as he told Welding, I just got tired of plowing. He went to Memphis and spent three years working in a mill, following this with a number of casual jobs. All the while he was keeping up with his guitar, playing as opportunities arose.

Mississippi Fred McDowell was a key figure in Mississippi hill country blues and one of the most dynamic performers of the 60s blues revival. Born on 12 January 1906, he moved to the Delta in 1928 and settled in Como, Mississippi, which is 40 miles or so to the south of Memphis.

Mississippi Fred McDowell was born Fred McDowell in Rossville, Tennessee, January 12, 1904. He died in Memphis,Tennessee on July 3, 1972. He was a blues singer and guitar player in the North Mississippi style. His parents, who were farmers, died when McDowell was a youth. He started playing guitar at the age of 14 and played at dances around Rossville. Wanting a change from ploughing fields, he moved to Memphis in 1926 where he worked in a number of jobs and played music for tips.
