Live At The Village Vanguard Again! is a jazz album by saxophonist John Coltrane. Recorded in May 1966, the album shows Coltrane playing in the free jazz style that characterized his last years. The line up consists of the augmented quartet of the time, featuring Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Rashied Ali on drums.
My endless question with this recording is that all the songs that Coltrane did at this gig and was it for one night. Did Rudy record anything else from these 1966 date or dates ? 답글 나에게 알림 Helpful. 2018년 3월 13일. 신고. 다음 참조: Live At The Village Vanguard Again!, LP, Album, RP, AS-9124, A-9124. Live album by John Coltrane. November 2–3, 1961 Village Vanguard, New York City. In reaction to the Quintet's residency at the Village Vanguard in New York City starting in late October 1961, Down Beat critic John Tynan described the group as "musical nonsense being peddled in the name of jazz" and "a horrifying demonstration of what appears to be a growing anti-jazz trend. European critics and audiences also had difficulty with appearances earlier. in the year, finding the group's music, especially that of Coltrane and Dolphy, puzzling and difficult to follow
Coltrane's 1961 Village Vanguard engagement is legendary - both for the quality of the music and for the controversy it generated at the time. This reissue contains the Live at the Village Vanguard album, nothing more, nothing less, and to my mind offers a very poor value for most listeners. There is another release - the Village Vanguard Master Takes - that offers the 3 tracks here, plus two others ("India" and "Impressions"). These are the 5 tunes from the 1961 Village Vanguard engagement released during Coltrane's lifetime
Parties wishing to hear the run in its entirety are encouraged to check out the multi-disc Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings (1997) as there are multiple takes of the same songs. This allows even the most unsophisticated jazz consumer the opportunity to note the difference in the various versions, while contrasting the player's widely diverse performance styles.
