Net proceeds from this CD benefit Amnesty International. Very similar to Various - Get Up ! Stand Up ! Hightlights From The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998, but with slight changes to the tracklistings.

The Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization Amnesty International presented the legendary Human Rights Concerts between 1986 and 1998 to raise consciousness and funds for the worldwide struggle for human rights. Now they are "¡RELEASED!". For the first time on 2 CD's comes the performance highlights of these historic concerts.

1988: Human Rights Now! 3 hours including 19 songs by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Sting Peter Gabriel Youssou N Dour Tracy Chapman and more! 1990: An Embrace of Hope 71 minutes including 10 songs by Sting Sinead O'Connor Jackson Browne Peter Gabriel Wynton Marsalis and more! 1998: The Struggle Continues. This would have been a much better three DVD set to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the "Human Rights Now" concerts. The first two DVDs here are from the NYC concert and feature full sets from Police, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, etc. The second disk is the theater documentary in it's full 3 hour format and adds Bruce Springsteen and U2 to the mix.

In 1986 the international human rights watchdog group Amnesty International celebrated their 25th anniversary by staging a benefit concert tour, "Conspiracy of Hope," in which a handful of leading rock and pop artists (including U2, the Police, and Lou Reed) showed their support for AI and their work. Conspiracy of Hope" was the first of several tours that would be staged to raise funds and increase awareness for Amnesty International, and ¡Released! The Human Rights Concerts brings together filmed documents of five different benefit shows staged between 1986 and 1998.

The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998. Let me make my biases clear. I am not a fan of Amnesty International as an organization. While I may agree with many of their criticisms of human rights violations and their support of groups such as Pussy Riot, I also find their assessments of other political entities specious and duplicitous. Consider U2’s "MLK/Pride (In the Name of Love)" from the 1986 A Conspiracy of Hope show at Giants Stadium. The song was still fresh (a 1984 release), the crowd pumped and singing along, the lyrical content relevant to political activism, the anthemic nature of the tune infectious, etc. On paper, this seems the perfect moment for U2 to create a transcendent moment.

The Human Rights Concerts is the collective name informally used to describe the series of 28 rock concerts presented worldwide 1986-1998 to raise funds for – and awareness of - the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights organization Amnesty International. Shot in HD in the Fall of 2007, this energizing concert features an incredible line up of classic and modern rock performances. Since 2002 Roger Daltrey, a patron of the Teen Cancer Trust, has been masterminding these annual week-long concerts at The Royal Albert Hall in London, and they have fast become one of the most anticipated events of the British Music calendar. Features Song Lyrics for Alanis Morissette's Released! The Human Rights Concerts - 1986-1998: The Struggle Continues (1998) album.
