Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra. Philharmonie, Großer Saal, Berlin. The live recordings of Also sprach Zarathustra, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, and Don Juan on this 2013 release from Deutsche Grammophon are a true feast for the ears, and the marvelous sonorities and myriad details in Strauss' dense but transparent scores are all on display here. Dudamel is one of the finest shapers of an orchestra's sound, and his expert handling of nuanced timbres and subtle dynamics is everywhere apparent in Also sprach Zarathustra.

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss, composed in 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical novel of the same name. The composer conducted its first performance on 27 November 1896 in Frankfurt. A typical performance lasts half an hour. The initial fanfare – titled "Sunrise" in the composer's program notes – became well-known after its use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Der Genesende (Live At Philharmonie, Berlin, 2012) Richard Strauss; Berliner Philharmoniker; Gustavo Dudamel. 8. Das Tanzlied (Live At Philharmonie, Berlin, 2012) Richard Strauss; Berliner Philharmoniker; Gustavo Dudamel. 9. Das Nachtwandlerlied (Live At Philharmonie, Berlin, 2012) Richard Strauss; Berliner Philharmoniker; Gustavo Dudamel. From the opening low notes played by the double basses, contrabassoons and organ, Also sprach Zarathustra inhabits a musical world of its own, a world seeking to question man's place in the universe. This iconic music, brought to life on this 2013 live recording by the Berlin Philharmonic under the skilled hand of Grammy-winner Gustavo Dudamel, resonates with wonderfully crafted orchestral bleedings and textures.

Years later, I grew more accepting; I was able to accept Richard Strauss as someone who faked the emotions in his music and who's Viennese schmaltz shtick (perhaps never more annoying and extraneous than in the overlong and irrelevant "Dance Song" (track 7) in Zarathustra) is a sort of lazy tick when he runs out of ideas - without disliking him for it.
