The Old West is a much fabled part of our national culture. Selected here are ten songs and ballads that reflect the richness and adversity of those who ventured into the region, as it was being settled. Many of the original Cowboy songs involved yodeling, a singing style more often associated with the Swiss Alps than the American West. Nonetheless, yodeling survived and even flourished during the long trail drives of the late 1800s. Certainly, some of the songs that were sung at night were meant to soothe the cattle, but also important, was the necessity of breaking the boredom of working a lengthy night shift. Following is the classic, Cattle Call, as performed by LeeAnn Rimes and Eddy Arnold. The album quickly went gold and over the years it has been often considered to be one of the most influential Western alums of the 20th century. Robbins wrote three of the songs, himself.

The field recordings Alan Lomax gathered for the Archive of American Folk Music housed at the Library of Congress are among the most important recordings ever made, and in spite of whatever private agendas Lomax had at the time, they remain an invaluable glimpse into what America was singing before the music industry geared up and took over the radio waves. Lomax as a singer and interpreter of some of those same songs, however, which is what is collected here, is an entirely different matter.

Otto Gray, an early cowboy band leader, stated authentic Western music had only three rhythms, all coming from the gaits of the cow pony: walk, trot, and lope  . In 1910, John Lomax, in his book Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, first gained national attention for Western music. Subsequent "western" songs down through the years have dealt with many aspects of the West, such as the mountain men, the '49ers, the immigrants, the outlaws, the lawmen, the cowboy, and, of course, the beauty and grandeur of the West Mainstream popularity.

Western and Cowboy Songs. Although it is often spoken of in the same breath as "Country" music, "Western" is a distinct area of American popular music whose roots reach into the frontier era of the 19th century. Five recordings from Library of Congress collections. When sound films arrived in the late 1920s, the singing cowboy became a staple hero of Westerns. Ken Maynard, a rodeo cowboy and veteran of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, started in silent films, but came into his own in the talkies as the screen's first singing cowboy. old fiddle tune enlivened with blues and jazz phrasing, a bit of a German or Czech melody played with a Spanish lilt, set to a fast, driving Dixieland rhythm. Western Swing also took western music all the way west to California, where many artists entertained before huge audiences of recent arrivals from Texas and Oklahoma in the 1940s and 1950s.
