Garland’s great strength is his ability to fine-tune his broad central theme – the merger of musical traditions. It has been in development for a long time. Garland explained that the trio evolved from an earlier project, If the Sea Replied, which took in interviews with lighthouse keepers and the acoustic qualities of lighthouses. And it showed, with Garland’s ethereal upper saxophone register, the uncanny intuition of the playing and arrangements that laid down clear markers. The long single set opened with Garland ruminating on bass clarinet as though conducting an internal dialogue

This album was released on the label Global Mix (catalog number GM2CD003). This album was released in 2009 year.

The second disc is a series of live performances by the trio, augmented by the Sacconi Strings on ‘Darkhouse’, and one more studio cut with Bollenback, a version of Mingus’s ‘Nostalgia in Times Square’ (the other non-Garland tunes are Miles Davis’s ‘Blue in Green’ and Kenny Wheeler’s ‘Sly Eyes’). Garland is consistently original and inventive on saxophones and bass clarinet, matched by Simcock’s compelling pianism and Sirkis’s rhythmic acumen and unconventional percussive colours.

Tim Garland: Libra by Frederick Bernas, published on January 23, 2009. Frontier," a four-part suite dedicated to Gunther Schuller, incorporates classical influences: the first segment, "SunGod," is a grandiose orchestral introduction sans jazz. Clear lunar connections can be made to Holst's masterpiece, The Planets (1918).

Multi reedman Garland, who is still best known to some for his tenures with Bill Bruford and Chick Corea and has become one of the UK’s more prominent jazz musicians presents an ambitious double CD with his trio (The Lighthouse Trio) on every track, but augmented by Paul Bollenbeck on guitar (whose detuned slide playing on Hang Loose is outstanding and original ). on three tunes, the Sacconi strings on one tune, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on a suite.

Tim Garland Trio: Blue in Green. Your browser does not support the audio element. Here with pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussion player Asaf Sirkis, plus the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on the impressive genre-defying Stream suite (the four-part Frontiers, which also features guitarist Paul Bollenback), this hot British saxophonist (and bass clarinetist) once more proves that he is the vanguard of a crossover music that should appeal to jazz and classical. An ambitious album which works the diffficult area between trio playing and orchestration, jazz and classical, Libra is a triumphant, mercurial album which confirms the status of these players in the frontline of British, and world, jazz - and offers as much fiery playing as quiet and considered reflection.
