Smokey is the debut studio album by American soul singer, songwriter, and producer Smokey Robinson. It was released on June 19, 1973, by Tamla Records and was Robinson's first solo record after his departure from The Miracles. The album featured the single "Sweet Harmony", which was his tribute to his former singing partners in the Miracles: Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore and Ronnie White. Universal’s 2010 collection Icon offers 12 tracks of Smokey Robinson, both on his own and with the Miracles. The conciseness of the collection means that there are inevitably some great songs missing, but what’s here - including Cruisin’, The Tears of a Clown, Shop Around, You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me, Being with You, The Tracks of My Tears - is excellent, making for a good, affordable sampler.

In 1960 Smokey Robinson got them an audition with Motown but before getting a contract with the company they needed to finish high school. Eventually the group changed the name into The Supremes and finally signed with Motown. They released I want a Guy just two months later. In 1976 Smokey Robinson’s successor in the Miracles, Billy Griffin, and one of the group’s original members, Warren Pete Moore, create a concept album, City of Angels which is described as a soul opera. The following March Love Hangover is released as a single from the new album by Diana Ross. The producer Hal Davis hears a demo of the song, and quickly records it with Diana in December 1975 in an eight-minute version aimed at the dance floor.
